What to do for Colds & Flu

Lisa Snowdon - Monday, May 09, 2011

Need some help battling the winter bugs? We all know the symptoms of the common cold: sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and fever. Although these symptoms are usually mild, colds and flu are the leading cause of doctor visits and missed days from school and work.

Dreading the winter months?

The common cold strikes many people every year, especially during these cold winter months. Many people often dread the winter months, not because of the cold, windy, wet weather, but because they suffer terribly with the symptoms of the flu or common cold. Keeping your immune system healthy by eating a well balanced diet and taking natural supplements can assist your body’s natural immune function and get you through the winter months without suffering those terrible cold and flu symptoms.

Instigators of a weakened immune system

There are many factors that may contribute to the weakening of your immune system. In order to maintain a healthy immune system you should try to minimise these factors:
Physiological, psychological and emotional stress

  1. Lack of regular exercise
  2. Lack of sleep, rest and relaxation
  3. Poor diet
  4. Nutritional deficiencies

An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

There is a lot to be said about this old saying. Maintaining optimal nutrition is extremely important in maintaining health, wellbeing and a balanced immune system. In order to give your body a fighting chance against the common cold, we suggest you follow these tips for a healthy immune system:

  1. Eat a balanced diet high in fibre and complex carbohydrates, low in fat, with moderate amounts of protein. Eat fresh, wholesome, unprocessed foods.
  2. De-stress! Enjoy plenty of rest and relaxation.
  3. Exercise regularly.
  4. Increase water intake to six to eight glasses per day.
  5. Supplement your diet with recommended nutrients and herbs.

How can Vibrant Nutrition help!

When colds or flu strike, we recommend using natural supplements to help support and boost your body’s natural immune function. Both the common cold and flu are caused by viruses and what many people may not realise is that antibiotics are not able to kill viruses; they are only able to help with bacterial infections. Fortunately there are herbs and nutrients that can help manage these viral infections.

Herbal immune boosters

The following herbs have been shown to kill the viruses which cause the common cold and flu and are now available from us in one convenient tablet.

  1. Andrographis paniculata is an Ayurvedic herb which has a long history of use for bacterial and viral infections. Clinical studies have shown it can reduce the severity and duration of the symptoms of colds and flu. Its anti- inflammatory properties contribute to its symptom- relieving properties.
  2. Picrorrhiza kurroa has been used traditionally in Indian and Chinese Medicine to help maintain a normal healthy immune system. It has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating actions.
  3. Sambucus nigra (Elderberry) has traditionally been used for its anti-catarrhal and fever-reducing actions to help relieve the symptoms of colds. It is indicated in catarrhal inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, such as the common cold/flu, sinusitis and recurrent or acute coughs.

Nutrients for immune support

Zinc may be the most important mineral for your immune system. Zinc deficiency may cause a weaker immune response, predisposing you to a more lengthy or severe cold. In fact, optimal zinc levels have been found to inhibit the common cold virus. Vitamin C is also important as it increases the activity of infection fighting white blood cells. Vitamin C may prevent the common cold as well as shorten the duration of the symptoms. These two important nutrients for the immune system are available from us in a pleasant tasting powdered supplement.

So even if it is cold and flu season again, doesn’t mean that you need to walk around with a throat that is on fire, a seriously stuffy head and a temperature that is through the roof. There are many natural supplements available to help boost your immune system, and prevention is much better than cure. Come and talk to us today about how you can get through the winter months fit and healthy.

Free Zinc status testing in the clinics for the next 4 weeks with your appointment.

Testimonials

Before the Sugar Detox I was a little sluggish, overloaded and overweight. I was surely overdoing the sugar intake and the alcohol! By the end of the detox I'd lost 3.2Kg, I definitely have more energy and am enjoying getting out of the house and onto the beach or to the pool for some exercise. Herbal teas have become my staple, I really enjoy them. I certainly would and have recommended this detox to other people looking to improve their health and lose weight.     Sue Reid, QLD

Before the program I was suffering from bloating of the stomach, reflux, insomnia and depression. The Hair Tissue Mineral sample results showed I had heavy metal toxicity and high levels of arsenic in my system. Lisa quickly put together a program of natural remedies and a quality diet to help me repair, renew and release toxins from my body. After the first week I began to benefit in lots of ways. I was sleeping less but better quality sleep and my thoughts became more positive.

After six weeks I lost 3 inches off my waist without exercise (after 6 weeks I’d lost 5Kg). Lisa did all this for me while I was living in a different city via the internet and phone and even after the program was complete she still keeps in contact for any further help. So change your life today, just decide. Many thanks Lisa     Jason Manuel, Brisbane

Just wanted to let you know that after two months on krill oil and adjusting the diet my cholesterol reading came down from 8.5 to 6.8. I know I have a way to go but so grateful for the improvement.     Brenda Botha, Sydney

Your knowledge of food and what's in it is amazing. I thought my choice of food and diet was pretty good, but you re-educated me. It's amazing what great results you can get from small changes - if everyone visited you (and listened to you!), there would be a lot more healthy, happy and energetic people in the world - well Sydney anyway! I certainly reached my goal in terms of weight loss.

I feel really good about my body and people have complimented me a lot at how much better I look. My clothes are falling off me so I have to go shopping! Thanks so much Lisa.

Lisa, your passion for good food is infectious. I have started reading labels and simply don't buy things that have half a dozen E numbers in them anymore! It takes a few more minutes each day to make a salad however it is very yummy and time well spent. I would recommend such a group detox to anyone as we have had your tireless and non-judgmental support.     Diane, North Ryde

I recently began working with Lisa doing phone consultations. This was very appealing for me as I live out of Sydney and this often excludes me from having access to many services. I find phone consultations so easy even if I did live in Sydney as travelling around Sydney can be full of traffic and time consuming so am very happy to skip all the travel. The phone consultation means we can catch up for shorter calls but more regularly for the same price as longer face to face consultations so the regular shorter calls help me to be more accountable to my goals.

I have found Lisa to be a most helpful in assisting me with my health goals and grateful to have access to her expertise in such a convenient manner.     Gabrielle Booty, Nowra

Lisa helped me to understand about foods and specifically which foods help increase energy levels. I’ve introduced new foods into my diet that are healthy for me and my whole family. I have enjoyed taking the challenge of a detox, which I may not have done without her support.     J.B. Epping

I'm still losing weight (albeit slowly) since the sugar detox last year and I'm 3kg away from my wedding weight!!!! I still want to be a few kg's lighter than that, so I'm still working very hard at my diet and exercise.

My diet is way better than my exercise regime, due to time constraints but I feel I'm doing well. As far as my diet is concerned, I've cut out ALL SUGAR (yes it's true - no sugar over Easter either!) and it's easy easy! By sugar, I mean anything processed with sugar, like chocolate, cereals, lollies etc... I still eat fruit and I still eat yogurt every night after dinner as my 'treat', but it's an organic, low in sugar yoghurt and satisfies me.

I don't eat much bread and I have now got the entire family eating mountain bread and I'm eating a little more meat than I like, but often I'm happy with a salad for dinner with a little feta and that satisfies me.

So, hopefully when I see you next, you'll be pleasantly surprised :) It's a wonderful lifestyle change and I feel fabulous for it. So much more energy!

Before coming for treatment I felt bloated, lethargic and unfit. It’s a work in progress but already I feel more energetic. Life seems more exciting, more enjoyable. It’s the best thing I’ve done for myself in a long time.     Norma Molloy, North Ryde

Felt a lot less bloated, my tummy felt "at ease" and much flatter, which was great. Do seem to have more energy. My skin is clearer and I lost 2.5Kg. Made me realise just how much hidden sugar I consume, and how much I pick at food all day. I'm now aware of how much soft drink I was drinking, and how at night time after all the kids are finally asleep I slump in front of the TV and eat lots of junk.
Very happy that I did this, and am quite amazed that I stuck to it really well, though I did finish a day early. Would really like to do it again in 6 months.

I recently participated in Lisa’s sugar detox program and it was great. Going back to food basics and not consuming anything from a ‘packet’ really had a positive effect on me  both physically and mentally. I found that even within the first few days, I wasn’t bloated after meals and I didn’t have sugar cravings in the afternoon. You don’t realise how much rubbish is in our everyday foods, even the ‘healthy’ ones, until you start reading labels…it’s frightening. I learned so much about food in general and how to cook a healthy, preservative free meal, it’s become a normal part of my everyday diet now.     Tanzie Clarke, Rhodes
