Our supermarket shelves scream “Low Fat” and “98% Fat Free” but these are the worst offenders. Because while they cut back on the fat, they pile in the sugars to make up for the taste.

Good Economics Are KILLING Us
OK, so why do we have this problem?
The truth is it’s a tale of corruption, greed and lies.
In 1972 anti-sugar campaigner Dr. John Yudkin published his landmark book Pure, White And Deadly. In it he proved that sugar, not fat was responsible for obesity, coronary heart disease and type II diabetes.
Unfortunately for Dr Yudkin his incredible research was ignored. This is because another scientist, Dr. Ancel Keys published his ‘Seven Countries Study’, which showed a direct link between saturated fat consumption and heart disease.
Could this be the biggest health conspiracy of the last 50 years?
Dr Ancel Keys report was widely accepted. But since it’s publication there have been questions asked about its accuracy. Here’s why, and you decide for yourself…
For a start Dr Keys actually studied 22 countries, not 7. And he discarded the results from 15 countries which were at odds with his original theory. When you plot the results from all 22 countries the direct correlation disappears.
Also, Dr Keys never did a proper multi-variate test. This means he never eliminated the impact of sugar on the results. And while I’ll spare you a lesson in statistics, failing to do this is a big mistake for a study of this nature. And can often lead to wildly inaccurate results.
Richard Nixon Swoops
The validity of Dr Keys’ research wasn’t important to then US President Richard though. With sugar off the hit-list and fat firmly in his sights , he seized on the opportunity to deliver on a key election promise and keep food prices under control.
He encouraged the development of High Fructose Corn Syrup because it was suddenly cheaper to use this instead of real sugar. This is because of cheaper production costs, increased tariffs on imported sugar and massive subsidies being paid to corn farmers. Genetically modified corn continues to make HFCS cheaper and cheaper even today.
And in 1977 Senator George McGovern used Dr Keys’ research to develop Dietary Goals For The United States. He proposed reducing fat to improve the health of US citizens.
This well meaning step put the health of the world back decades.
Suddenly fat was evil but sugar was OK! And the rest, as you know is history. Fat consumption fell and sugar consumption shot up. Obesity rates doubled. Coronary disease shot through the roof, Type II diabetes rates soared, as did all the other medical conditions we now know are caused by sugar.
HFCS is so cheap it’s found it’s way into almost everything.

And in Australia it’s even worse. Not only are we bombarded with cheap imported HFCS, we’re also under attack from cheap sugar thanks to our heavily subsidised sugar cane industry!

And if you think raw sugar is somehow safer because it’s natural then think again. It actually turns into the dangerous fructose as we digest it. Whether it’s manufactured fructose or plain old sugar, it gets you either way.

Liver disease and high blood pressure
